Although there will be a few American shad hanging around in the deeper channels for another week or so it is safe to say that for 99% of fisherman the shad run is over. The river level has dropped and the soaring water temperature has the river entering its summer stage. Gar have begun to show up and smallmouth have begun to move back into their summer holes. Small striped bass can be found concentrated at and above Chain Bridge and should remain so for a couple more weeks. Despite the shad being gone this is an exciting time on the river. Largemouth, smallmouth and walleye will become very active later this month and into June, add in the schoolie striper bite and we have a very fun month ahead of us.
